How to purge tags in SketchUp

In SketchUp, tags (formerly known as layers) help organize the model by grouping and controlling the visibility of different objects. Over time, unused tags may accumulate and clutter the workspace. To clean up your model, you can purge unused tags, which removes any that are no longer associated with any geometry in the model.

Here’s how you can purge tags in SketchUp:

1. Access the Tags Panel

  • In SketchUp 2021 and later, you can access tags from the Tags Panel:
    1. Go to Window > Tags to open the Tags panel.

2. Purge Unused Tags

  • To purge all unused tags, you need to access the model’s purge feature:
    1. Go to Window > Model Info.
    2. In the Model Info dialog box, click the Statistics tab on the left.
    3. Click the Purge Unused button. This will remove any unused tags, components, materials, and other unused elements from your model.

3. Check If Tags Are Purged

  • After purging, return to the Tags Panel to confirm that any unused tags have been removed. Only tags still associated with model objects will remain.

Important Notes:

  • Purging removes any tags that are not currently applied to geometry or groups in the model, so make sure you have no plans to use those tags before purging them.
  • If you accidentally purge a tag, there is no “undo” for purging—although you can use Undo to restore the state of your model if purging caused unwanted changes.

By regularly purging unused tags, you can keep your SketchUp models organized and optimized for performance.
