SketchUp models look like SketchUp models until you render them. The good news is that the rendering ecosystem around SketchUp is the richest of any 3D tool in its price bracket. The bad news is that engine choice matters far more than most tutorials admit. Here is what to use and how to work. The main render engines compared
- V-Ray for SketchUp - the quality benchmark. Best materials, best light control, best for still images that need to look photographic. Steepest learning curve and the highest price.
- Enscape - real-time. You model in one window and see a lit, rendered view in the other. Unbeatable for design iteration and client walkthroughs, slightly less refined than V-Ray on close-up stills.
- Twinmotion - built on Unreal Engine. Excellent vegetation, weather and animation, generous asset library, forgiving for beginners.
- D5 Render - fast real-time ray tracing on NVIDIA RTX hardware, strong free tier, very popular with interior designers.
- Lumion - landscape and context king, heavy hardware requirements.
- Free options - Kerkythea and Blender via SKP import cost nothing but demand more setup time.
Most professionals end up with two: a real-time engine for iteration and one high-quality engine for final images.
Modelling for rendering
Ninety percent of a bad render is a bad model. Before you touch a light:
- Fix reversed faces. Set the Monochrome style and flip every blue face. Render engines light front faces only.
- Add thickness. Zero-thickness glass and walls kill realism and confuse refraction.
- Chamfer hard edges. A tiny 1 to 2 mm rounded edge catches a highlight and is the fastest realism upgrade there is.
- Purge and organise. Use tags for lighting groups and run Purge Unused before every render session.
Materials that read as real
Flat colour never looks real. Every material needs at least a diffuse texture and a roughness or bump map. Look for PBR sets, apply them at the correct real-world scale, and vary the reflection: a polished floor at 100 percent gloss looks like plastic, while a slight roughness reads as lacquered wood. Lighting: keep it simple
Start with sun and sky only. Set the correct geographic location and time of day in Window > Model Info > Geo-location, then rotate the sun until the shadows tell the story you want. Add artificial lights only where the scene needs them. A common beginner error is stacking a dozen lights to fix an exposure problem that a single camera setting would solve.
For interiors, an HDRI environment through the windows produces natural falloff and reflections with almost no setup.
Camera and composition
Set field of view to around 35 degrees for interiors and 60 for exteriors, keep the camera at human eye height (about 1.6 m), and switch on two-point perspective so vertical lines stay vertical. Save each view as a scene so you can re-render it identically after changes.
Output and post-production
Render larger than you need, typically 3000 px wide, and always save the render elements or passes if your engine supports them. Five minutes of contrast, colour balance and slight bloom in Photoshop or Affinity Photo does more for the final image than an hour of extra render time.
