Textures are what turn a grey SketchUp box into something that looks like a real building. This guide covers the full workflow: using the built-in material library, importing your own images, controlling scale and position, and fixing the classic problems (stretched, blurry or tiled textures). How materials and textures work in SketchUp
In SketchUp, a material is a colour plus, optionally, a texture (an image file) and an opacity value. Every face has a front side and a back side, and each side can carry a different material. That single fact explains most texture problems beginners run into: you painted the back face and are looking at the front, or the opposite.
Open the Materials panel (Window > Materials on Windows, Colors on macOS), pick a material, and click a face with the Paint Bucket (shortcut B). Hold Ctrl to paint all connected faces sharing the same material, Shift to replace that material everywhere in the model, and Alt to sample an existing material.
The built-in texture library
SketchUp ships with a decent starter set: brick and cladding, roofing, wood, metal, tile, stone, vegetation, water and translucent materials. They are low resolution by today's standards, but they are seamless and perfect for early design stages where you only need to read volumes and materiality.
Two habits pay off immediately: duplicate a stock material before editing it so you never lose the original, and give your materials real names (Facade - Red Brick 210 beats Brick_Antique1) so the model stays readable when you hand it over.

SketchUp itself is not a PBR renderer, so it only uses the diffuse (colour) map. Normal, roughness and displacement maps only matter once you plug in a render engine such as V-Ray, Enscape or Twinmotion.
Importing your own texture
Use File > Import, choose your JPG or PNG, and select Use as texture. Click once to place the corner and a second time to set the size. Alternatively, create a new material in the Materials panel, click the folder icon and browse to the image file. PNG supports transparency, which is what you want for cut-out trees, people and railings.
Keep image files reasonable: a 1024 or 2048 pixel seamless tile is plenty for architectural work. Dropping a 6000 pixel photo on every wall is the single fastest way to make a model unusable, because SketchUp keeps every texture in memory.
Scaling and positioning a texture
Right-click a textured face and choose Texture > Position. Four coloured pins appear:
- Red moves the texture.
- Green scales and rotates it.
- Blue shears it.
- Yellow distorts it in perspective, which is how you map a facade photo onto an angled wall.
For exact dimensions, edit the material and type the real world width and height, for example 1.2 m for a brick panel. Locking the aspect ratio keeps the proportions right. Once one face is correct, sample it with the Paint Bucket and Alt, then paint the rest so the whole model stays consistent.
Fixing the four classic texture problems
Stretched textures usually mean the face was scaled after being painted, or the texture was projected onto a curved surface. Repaint the face, or use Texture > Projected before painting curved geometry.
Blurry textures mean the image resolution is too low for the surface size, or SketchUp is downsampling on the fly. Increase the source resolution or reduce the real world tile size.
Visible tiling is fixed either by using a genuinely seamless image, or by scaling the tile so its repetition is not obvious at the camera distance you will actually render from.
Texture not showing almost always means you are looking at the back face. Turn on Monochrome view (View > Face Style > Monochrome), find the blue-grey faces, right-click and choose Reverse Faces.
Keeping your model light
Run Window > Model Info > Statistics > Purge Unused regularly. Every material you tried and abandoned stays in the file with its full-size image.
