A floor plan is the foundation of almost every SketchUp project. Get it accurate and the 3D model builds itself; get it wrong and every wall, roof and section afterwards inherits the error. This guide walks through drawing a plan from scratch, tracing an imported drawing, and turning the result into 3D walls. Set up your units before you draw anything
Go to Window > Model Info > Units and pick Decimal millimetres or Architectural inches depending on your region. Set precision as fine as your work needs and, critically, turn off Length Snapping. Length snapping rounds your input silently and is the single most common cause of walls that refuse to close.
Start from the Architectural Millimeters or Architectural Inches template so the camera, styles and units are already coherent.
Drawing the plan from measurements
- Select the Rectangle tool (R) and click once at the origin.
- Instead of dragging, type the dimensions directly, for example
8000,6000, then press Enter. Never eyeball a dimension you already know. - Use the Offset tool (F) on the rectangle face and type your wall thickness, typically 200 mm, to create the inner face in one move.
- Draw internal partitions with the Line tool (L), always typing the distance from a known corner rather than clicking approximately.
- Erase the leftover diagonal or guide edges so you are left with clean closed faces.
Keep the entire plan flat on the red/green axes. Any accidental Z movement will haunt you later when you push the walls up.
Tracing an existing plan or scanned drawing
If a client sends a PDF or a photo of a plan, export it as an image and use File > Import, choosing "Use as image". Place it on the ground plane, then scale it correctly: draw a line along a wall of known length, select the Tape Measure (T), click the two ends of that wall on the image, type the real length and accept the prompt to resize the model. Everything is now to scale.
Lock the image in place (right-click > Lock) and trace over it on a separate tag so you can hide the underlay later. For DWG files, SketchUp Pro imports vector linework directly through File > Import > AutoCAD Files, which is far more accurate than tracing.
Turning the plan into 3D walls
Select the wall faces and use Push/Pull (P), typing your ceiling height, typically 2700 mm. Push one wall, then double-click every other face to repeat the same extrusion instantly.
Before extruding, group the plan (select all, right-click > Make Group) and work inside the group. Ungrouped geometry sticks together, and once your doors, windows and furniture all share raw edges the model becomes almost impossible to edit.
Doors, windows and openings
Draw a rectangle on the wall face at the right height, then Push/Pull it through the wall to cut the opening. For repeated openings, make the door or window a component (G) with the "Cut opening" option enabled so it punches its own hole wherever you place it. Dimensions, tags and presentation
Switch to Top view with a Parallel Projection camera to produce a true 2D plan. Add dimensions with the Dimension tool, put them on their own tag, and create a scene so you can return to that exact view. SketchUp Pro users can then send the scene to LayOut to produce a scaled, printable drawing set.
Useful tag structure for any plan: Walls, Doors, Windows, Furniture, Dimensions, Underlay. Tags control visibility; groups control geometry. Do not confuse the two.
Common mistakes
- Length snapping left on so walls end up 199.7 mm thick.
- Not grouping, so moving one wall drags half the plan with it.
- Tracing an unscaled image, which makes every downstream measurement wrong.
- Modelling walls as single surfaces when you later need thickness for sections.
- Working off-origin, which complicates exports to other software.

Can I draw a floor plan in the free version of SketchUp?
Yes. SketchUp Free in the browser handles plans, walls and openings perfectly well. You lose DWG import and LayOut, so scaled printed drawings and CAD exchange require SketchUp Pro.

Import the image, then use the Tape Measure tool to click two points of a wall whose real length you know, type that real length and confirm the resize prompt. The whole model rescales to match.
What wall thickness should I use in SketchUp?
Use the real construction thickness. Typical interior partitions are 100 to 150 mm and exterior walls 200 to 300 mm, but always follow the actual assembly you are documenting.
Why do my walls not create a face when I close the plan?
