SketchUp Extension Warehouse: How to Find, Install and Manage Plugins

Extensions are the reason professionals stay on SketchUp. The Extension Warehouse is the official store, built into SketchUp Pro, with well over a thousand plugins ranging from free one-click utilities to full BIM and rendering suites. Here is how to use it properly, and how to avoid the plugin bloat that slows SketchUp to a crawl.

Opening the Extension Warehouse

In SketchUp Pro, go to Window > Extension Warehouse, or use Extensions > Extension Warehouse depending on your version. Sign in with your Trimble account. There is also a web version at extensions.sketchup.com if you prefer to browse in a real browser and download RBZ files manually.

Note that extensions require SketchUp Pro or Studio. The free web version cannot run them, which is the single biggest practical difference between the two.

Installing an extension

Find the extension, check the compatibility line against your SketchUp version, and click Install. SketchUp will ask you to confirm, then load it immediately, usually adding a new toolbar and a submenu under Extensions. If the toolbar does not appear, enable it under View > Toolbars.

Installing an RBZ file manually

Plenty of excellent extensions, especially those from SketchUcation, are distributed as RBZ files outside the official store. To install one:

Download the .rbz file (do not unzip it).
Go to Window > Extension Manager.
Click Install Extension at the bottom left.
Select the .rbz and confirm the security warning.
Restart SketchUp if the tools do not show up.

The Extension Manager

The Extension Manager is where you actually control your setup. It lists every installed extension with a toggle to enable or disable, version information and an uninstall option. Two habits matter:

Disable rather than uninstall when you are testing whether a plugin causes a crash or a slowdown.
Keep only what you use. Every enabled extension loads at startup. Twenty plugins can add thirty seconds to launch time and cause conflicts.

Set the loading policy under the Extension Manager settings to Identified Extensions Only if you work in an environment with security requirements.

Updating extensions

The Extension Warehouse panel shows available updates on its Manage tab. Update deliberately, not reflexively: check that the new version supports your SketchUp release before installing, especially just after a yearly SketchUp release, when many developers need a few weeks to catch up.

Licensing and paid extensions

Paid extensions are usually licensed per user, sometimes per machine, and increasingly by annual subscription. Keep your licence emails: after a reinstall or a computer change you will need the key or the account login to reactivate. Many developers allow two activations so you can run a desktop and a laptop.

Troubleshooting

Extension does not appear: check the Extension Manager to confirm it is installed and enabled, then check View > Toolbars.

SketchUp crashes on startup: hold the disable-all approach, launch, then re-enable one extension at a time to identify the culprit.

Install fails: the file may be for a different SketchUp version, or your user account may lack write permissions to the plugins folder. Run SketchUp as administrator once for the install.

Ruby errors in the console: a clear sign of a version mismatch. Contact the developer or roll back to the previous release.

Which extensions should you actually install?
