How to Downconvert a Rhino File (Save to an Older .3DM Version)

You just received a Rhino .3dm file saved in a newer version of Rhino than the one you have installed, and it refuses to open. This is one of the most common issues Rhino users run into. The good news: you can downconvert (downgrade) a Rhino file to an older version in just a few clicks.
In this guide, we'll show you two ways to do it:
- Using Rhino itself (if you own a recent version)
- Using the free online tool Rhino File Converter — no software required
Why downconvert a Rhino file?
Each new Rhino release introduces a new .3dm file format. A file saved in Rhino 8 will not open in Rhino 6 or 7 by default. Downconverting is useful when:
- A client or contractor is still on an older version of Rhino
- You need to import the geometry into a plugin or CAD tool that only supports older Rhino formats
- You want to share a file that opens everywhere without asking the recipient to upgrade
Method 1 — Downconvert with Rhino
If you have Rhino installed:
- Open your
.3dmfile in Rhino. - Go to File > Save As…
- In the Save as type dropdown, pick the older version you need — for example Rhino 5 3D Models (*.3dm), Rhino 6, or Rhino 7.
- Click Save. Rhino warns you that some newer features may be lost — that's normal.
Your file is now compatible with the older Rhino version you selected.
Method 2 — Downconvert online (no Rhino needed)
If you don't have Rhino, or you don't have a recent enough version to open the file in the first place, the fastest option is a free online converter.
Go to rhino-file-converter.com and:
- Drop your
.3dmfile into the upload area. - Choose the target Rhino version (Rhino 5, 6, 7 or 8).
- Click Convert and download the downgraded file.
The tool runs entirely in the cloud — you don't need to install Rhino or any plugin. It's the easiest way to downgrade a Rhino file when you're stuck.
What you lose when downconverting
Downgrading is not lossless. Depending on how far back you go, you may lose:
- SubD objects (introduced in Rhino 7) — converted to meshes or NURBS
- Newer render material definitions
- Grasshopper-embedded data or newer block instance features
Geometry (curves, surfaces, polysurfaces, meshes) is preserved in almost every case.
